Wilderness Alpine Trek with pack horses
Connel Creek Camp
DAY 1 Shuttle — Vancouver to Ranch — Historical and Cultural Tour of BC’s Fraser Canyon
On Chilcotin Holidays’ shuttle bus from the Guildford Sheraton Hotel in Surrey, BC (approximately a 5-hour drive) you’ll travel along Hwy. 1 — the gateway to north and east British Columbia — into the Fraser Canyon and learn about the beginning of the historic Gold Rush Trail. This scenic mountainous highway has been traversed by many travellers on foot, horse, rail, and vehicle and dates back to the first native peoples, fur traders, gold seekers, the building of the Canadian National Railway in the early 1900s, to the early pioneers that cleared and settled the land. It’s an enlightening and thoroughly educational ride to Gold Bridge where you’ll begin your incredible wilderness adventure.
After a midday ranch meal, your group will receive a thorough orientation of the area, trails, and mountains. You’ll overnight at the ranch with enough time to fit in 1 of 3 hiking excursions before nightfall. Choose between Lover’s Bluff Loop to get an excellent aerial view of the ranch, Upper River Hike, or Lower River Hike. After dinner you’ll repack your personal gear into duffel bags provided ready for an early start the next day.
After a hearty western breakfast, it’s a 1 hour drive to the trailhead through the historic gold mine towns of Gold Bridge and Bralorne. From the trailhead, you’ll hike along an old mine road into the alpine meadows and get the chance to explore some pioneer mine cabins still standing from the glory days of the Cariboo Gold Rush. You’ll hike through flowering meadows of wildflowers to the pass and into Connel Valley where you’ll pass hanging glaciers.
Hike the north side of Connel Valley today on the third day of your trek. There will be many wildlife viewing opportunities for glassing mountain goats and grizzly bears feasting on the new summer grasses with newly born kids and cubs.
Today you’ll hike Centre Ridge between Connel Creek and McGillivray Valleys east towards Anderson Lake all the while looking for grizzly bears and mountain goats and marvelling at the the 360° views.
It’s a more relaxing day on the fifth day of your hiking adventure with a chance for the group to explore the glaciers behind Connel Creek Camp. Look for sightings of mountain goats on the steep glaciated scree.
After breakfast the group will hike back to the trailhead through flowering alpine meadows to where a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to the ranch.
On the last day of your 7-Day Ranch-Based Hiking Trip, you can fit one more hike in before your 1 pm departure on our shuttle bus back to Vancouver. Choose from hiking Lover’s Bluff Loop to get an excellent aerial view of the ranch, Upper River Hike, or Lower River Hike.
